SALISBURY PLAINS (AUG 06)
One of our first trial runs in Ubejane was a trip down to Salisbury with Nick and Viki, Rob and Inga, Bron and Andrew and a bunch of other Overlanders that had all met through Bron and Andrew. |
We all met just near Stonehenge for a meet and greet before heading off. A lot of us hasd heard of each other through viewing web sites and conversing on horizons unlimited etc, but it was great to put faces to names. What Sarah and I realised very quickly is that most of the guys there were heading our in the following few months and that we were a long way behind in our prep! |
The terrain around Salisbury Plain was not too hectic for first timers. Here John navigates a deep rut. A good chance to test out the vehicles and see how they react when loaded. |
Some great scenary around. At times you could be in Africa! The ruts in this section were quite close together and deep. In mud this section would be interesting. |
Some big skies here for the UK. The lone 'Criuiser' of the group doing well. All the rest of us were in 110's not forgetting Bon and Andrew in their discovery GNU!. |
Having completed the section that you can see above we took 5 to have a chat. Cathey from www.southwardbound.co.uk fame is in the right of the picture with Andrew from www.4x4xafrica.com taking a break. Ubejane is the 'naked' landy 3rd back behind the 'cruiser'. This will be the last time that we torment her by making her 'heel' a cruiser.... |
Overlanders taking a break and catching up on how the vehicles are performing! Se was driving Ubejane at this stage. |
Sarah and I take a quick break and a photo oportunity before heading out again. How naked does the Ubejane look?! |
Another drive along the rutted tracks with our new Overlanding friends and it was nearly time to head back to Nick and Viki for a after drive thirst quncher... |
What will the neighbors say?! Needless to say many of us actually did camp right in the spot that we parked out Landies! |
Unwinding over a few beers, boerrie and an ocasional cigar it was great to relive the day and discuss the challenges ahead. Only if we knew then what we know now..... |
