LAND ROVER
|
|
The 110 hard top is the choice of many trans Africa travellers as it offers a fantastic payload capacity and security. We considered a 90 hard top but discounted it on the basis of space as we will be carrying a lot of equipment it may have been problematic. The Land Cruiser is probably the best vehicle for a trans Africa expedition. It has a powerful 4 litre diesel engine, massive payload and it’s reliability is legendary. However, we are fanatical land rover fans and the thought of doing the trip in any vehicle other than a defender was unthinkable! So in a nutshell this is how we came to settle on the 110 hard top. We had set a tight budget and it took a lot of hard work to find a 110 300tdi Hard Top in our price range. We had considered the 200tdi and its cheaper price tag makes it a tempting choice. However, the LT77 gearbox has a reputation of not being as reliable as the R380 in the 300tdi and a gearbox is an expensive piece of kit to have repaired or replaced in a remote part of Africa. So the 300tdi it was. We eventually found what we were looking for in Cambridge from Steve and Fiona. Steve had bought the defender from Severn Trent Water and had been using it as a tow vehicle in his construction business. |
