CAMPING

Luckily for us we have always enjoyed camping and after many camping-mountain biking trips around England we have already accumulated most of the crucial camping equipment. Additional items we have bought include: Camping table - we found a sturdy table at the Billing Land rover Show 2006 for £40. Kelly Kettle - Fellow travelers Bron and Andrew www.4x4xafrica.com demonstrated how a swift collection of garden leaves and twigs can boil water in no time. Convinced we bought one.....only thing is it stinks after use so has to live on the roof rack. Camping chairs - kindly donated to us by a nice man at the Eastbourne Ladies tennis tournament. I sweet talked a deal: 'Buy a tennis racket ....and get two chairs free'. Roof top tent - Roof top tents are expensive items but since I value a good nights sleep we decided it was worth getting a decent one. We managed to get a second hand ECHO tent from Kevin in Dorset who Bruce contacted through the LRO website. Cost - £300. Once again ...cutting costs! Only thing is it has a condensation problem in cold weather and you get woken up with drips on your face so we made a condensation sheet out of towels - perfect! Gas cooker (option 1)- You can use propane or butane gas through Africa but propane (blue) gas is easier to access. We bought a simple double gas cooker from Millets. Duel fuel cooker (option 2) - We bought our dual fuel cooker on e-bay. It runs on unleaded petrol or coleman fuel. We tested it in France, but are not convinced as the two burners cannot be set at different temperatures and it needs a lot of juice!! We're thinking of taking a gas cooker now. Engel Fridge - We bought a 42l Engel with insulating cover (essential) for £500 from Simon in Newhaven. This is the cheapest place for them www.mps4x4store.co.uk. He also sells them at Billing Show. Coffee percolator for the fire - Bruce bought this from Cabellas in the USA. Pots - Bruce's brother, Rob, kindly brought over camping pots and a braai grid. They'll be put to good use. Lights - So far we have a light in the back of Ubhejane which runs off the auxiliary battery. We still need to get another outside light. Storage: We lugged back 6 black storage boxes from South Africa which fit perfectly into our draw packing system! Once again we cunningly sneaked them passed the check in lady at CT airport balancing 1/2 their weight on the trolley! This is what we brought back...and we weren't overweight (Hehe). photo Other useful items: Head lamps - essential !! (Thanks folks) Mag lights
Other items still to buy: Mozzie proof gazebo! kitchen utensils
